It was years ago but I can see it in my mind like it was yesterday.  We made Apple Crisp and Trevor was standing there looking at me so I got down on my hands and knees and offered him a piece on the fork.   He sniffed it and made a disgusting face but I looked at him and said “Eat!”  He looked at it and looked at me and slowly, very slowly he opened his mouth and I put it in his mouth and he closed his jaws. He looked at me not moving and I said “Chew!”

He looked up at me like I had lost my mind but he began to chew.  All of a sudden his left eyebrow shot up and his eyes went wide and his eyes glowed!

HE swallowed and as I was getting more from the stove he sat in front of me and looked at me in the eyes and looked at my plate and looked again at me. So, I gave him a piece of Apple Crisp.  He loved it and it became his favorite food!

From that day on when we made Apple Crisp he would wake up and come over and watch us make it and stick it in the oven. Then, he would lay down in front of the oven and sleep until it was done.  He always got his piece after that and when he knew we had Apple Crisp he would run to the fridge waiting for his piece.  IT was the only food I ever saw Trevor act like this for.

I will never forget that look in his eyes and his eyebrow shooting up on one side when he ate it for the first time.  I never heard of a dog liking apple crisp before or since.  Trevor was like that at times. He was just a little boy wrapped up in a big collie body and hid it well from most with his rough exterior and gruff manner… but with me he was just a little kid and a softie at heart… I still miss him… I always will…..

Don’t forget to check out our earlier post from today…

We picked her up at the age of 6, her show days over and in need of a good home.  Sadie was stubbborn, food was her life, she had attitude yet she was funny and despite her toughness she had a soft side that surprised us all.  Sadie was funny and would pull Ginger like antics and follow it up with attitude.  She made her own decisions in her life and it was she that retired herself from walking by running to the bedroom and taking a nap when asked if she wanted to go for a walk.

She loved food…. any food… even stuff that wasnt food! LOL….  Her favorite trick was if the kids were on the couch eating a sandwich she would rub down the couch and as she passed by she would, without turning her head or without blinking or without stopping rubbing she would walk past and snatch the sandwich and keep going like nothing happened! LOL….  She once came up by the table as I made a ham sandwich, she pushed the top piece of bread up with her nose and with her tongue snatched the piece of ham out and walked away eating it as she looked for more food.

When we brought Teddy home as a puppy she adopted him and raised him as her own puppy. She would play with him roaring like a dinosaur and when she had enough she would head butt him and he would slide ten feet across the floor as she strutted off for a nap.  She loved naps…. she loved food, she loved sassing, she loved being alone at times.  Every night she would snore and I would tell her good night Sadie,,,, she would snarl and growl and I would call her our tater pup and she would snarl more with her teeth showing… We laughed for she wouldnt bite anyone but she hated her sleep being interrupted and she had attitude.

Sadie had expressions of disgust, anger, snarling that would make your blood curdle, unless you knew her and then you would laugh.  She loved to bark when outside… bark at the clouds, the birds, a dirt devil swirling by, ants, butterflies, the wind.. you name it and she barked at it.

She hate being brushed, she hated having her toenails trimmed, but would tolerate it as long as she got a steady stream of treats.  Rowdy, loud and naughty Sadie was funny and fun to be around for her antics always made us laugh.   When called to come in, Sadie would think about it… then slowly walk the other way and go around the yard slowly till she got to the door going as slowly as she could.  LOL…..

One of our favorite memories is of her when she was older and her eyes were very good…. she walked up to where the fence was… well used to be for we were putting up a new fence so there was no fence at all there.  She stopped where the fence was… looked for about 5 minutes across the field and barked sassily and walked back to the door…..  she never realized the fence was gone… 🙂

We all loved Sadie, but she never had a human she adopted…. she loved food more… LOL…  She was a delight to be with for she could have fun…. but only as long as she wanted to have fun…. then it was bedtime and God help you if you tried to stop her…

Sadie lived to be 16 years old….. dieing of old age surrounded by those who loved her.  We will always remember you Sadie, daughter of the great Champion The Meadows Notorious, a cousin of our Niamh and we will always love you and miss you for you were one of the more interesting and lovable collies we ever loved!

Sadie is on the far right…
Niamh is in the center and Niamh’s Father was also a Champion, Champion ROM Twin Acres Concert Master, Teddy is on the left… bloodlines past parents unknown…. 🙂

Sadie giving Laddie the stink eye… LOL

Tater pup was only two points away from becoming a Champion in her own right.  Born in 1994 Sadie had puppies and was to enter her last contest for her championship when it was discovered she was a carrier of the Collie eyes diseases… and her puppies had them…..  So, Sadie was never made into the Champion for part of the reward for Championships are selling Championship puppies…. instead she was given a great life for a couple of years and then they searched hard to find her a good adoptive home and that was us. She lived a wonderful life here and enjoyed every minute of it in her own way…. One of our more interesting characters …. We miss you and love you Sadie….till we meet again old tater pup…… til we meet again….

Trevor’s sister Hallie had come into season and was spending her time with Smoke, whom she was rejecting for he was not the Alpha Male. Being the Matriarch, Hallie decided she would not slip down in the social pack order to mate. Little did the Man realize how deeply the pairing of Smoke and Hallie affected Trevor’s dignity as the Alpha Male. After a day or so, Trevor stopped eating. He wouldn’t even take treat, turning his head away angrily when the Man offered it to him This went on for several days until the Man began to worry about Trevor. The Man looked at Trevor who was laying at his feet looking dignified as he looked over the pack of collies. “You need to eat Boo” the Man said. Trevor looked annoyingly at the Man, which caused the Man more concern for Trevor never looked like that at him.

The Man arose and deciding Trevor had to eat and went into the kitchen and found some baby food, and made some warm baby food cereal with milk and sat down in front of Trevor who looked at the food with growing annoyance. Trevor looked up at the man and then turned his head sighing in disgust. The Man opened the baby food, filled the spoon and gently pushed the spoon into Trevor’s mouth behind the fangs, knowing Trevor would open his mouth, which he did. Trevor slowly smacked his lips and ate the food wrinkling his nose up in disgust. But, the Man softly and gently kept feeding Trevor as he talked encouragingly and lovingly to Trevor. The jar of baby food gone, the Man began feeding him the baby breakfast cereal and as Trevor slowly took the food with disgust on his face, the Man could’ve swore a couple of times he saw Trevor enjoying it. Finally, finishing up the bowl, the Man went to make more hot cereal for Trevor as Trevor snorted in disgust, letting the Man know he didn’t like being fed like a baby. The man mixed milk into the cereal and began warming it up. He was worried about Trevor and as he turned to put the cereal box away he caught in the corner of his eye Trevor leaning forward, looking up to see if he was gonna get more of the food. The Man turned towards Trevor who looked away with a look of annoyance on his face. The man slowly turned away keeping his eye on Trevor who as the Man turned away leaned back forward and watched to see if more food was coming. The Man smiled realizing Trevor was trying to maintain his image of strength, Independence and Dignity as he waited for the food.

The Man sat down next to Trevor again and slowly they went through the motions of Trevor acting like he didn’t want the food and acting annoyed by the feeding. But, several times the Man saw Trevor was relishing the food and so he played along, coaxing Trevor, giving him praise with each bite and making him feel loved throughout the feeding. At least he is eating the Man thought. This went on for a couple of days until Hallie moved out of season. Knowing it was safe for Trevor to see his sister again The Man let him spend some time with her alone and when he came back from the time with her Trevor let it be known he was Mr. Alpha! As he passed the Man, the Man offered him a treat which Trevor took with delight, looking happily into his eyes and then moving on to enforce his Alpha role on the family of collies. The Man realized all of this had been over Trevor feeling his Alpha role was being threatened by his lack of contact with Hallie during her season and learned much on how to handle Trevor during such times, making sure he didn’t feel that his role as Alpha at the Meadow didn’t appear to be threatened.  Chuck 2008
