Picture of a young Treve…..
While Sunnybank Lad made Albert Terhune famous and put Sunnybank on the map it was Ch. Sigurd, known as Treve who brought the first Championship to Sunnybank!
Born on June 10, 1919 Treve’s parents were Monto Hector and Glenwin Peggy. Terhune bought him and brought him home and found him to be “strange.” On one hand Treve would try to be mean and fierce but his lovable, kind gentle nature always won out. He would give treve an order and he would growl yet do it. Try to pet him and he would move out of reach. yet, tell him to stay and he would do so.
I smiled when I learned this for several of his descendents who live here have some of those traits. Lad will move away if you try to pet him, yet he will hold still if told too but growl to let you know he doesn’t like it, yet kiss your hand seconds later…… Several of our collies have the extreme personality responses and always the lovable and kind side wins out, despite the protests!
Terhune when he found Treve was looking for a new stud to put his collies in the hunt for championships and he found him at a dog show in Treve who en route to his third win in the puppy or junior fields.
Terhune had recently read a book by Katherine Bates she wrote about her collie Sigurd. He loved the book and he also thought her song America The Beautiful should be our national anthem. Although he gave the colle the name Sigurd he was given another name because they found it they yelled Sigurd the collies thought they were yelling Sick ’em and this would create a melee.
So, Terhune went on vacation and when he came back his kennel manager had given him a name. When Terhune asked his name he was told Treve. Terhune wondered why and Robert Friend told him.. “Well a dog has to learn to Treve before he can retrieve doesn’t he?” Terhune found this absolutely ridiculous but he loved it and he was known as Treve forevermore.
Lad’s son Wolf was a pal of Treve’s yet there was a friendly rivalry between the two. Treve was a finicky eater so Robert Friend would tell him “Wolf, I’ll give it to Wolf” and Treve would gobble down his food. Well, in the ring Treve, who was known to clown around by walking funny and acting up was pulling a stunt while Terhune was showing him, was up to his antics. Robert Friend suddenly yelled “Wolf, I’ll give it to Wolf!” Instantly Treve looked like a Champion and he took the ribbon!
In two weeks the great Champion would be gone from this earth. It seems he had a enlarged and weakened heart and had contracted Ptomaine poisoning which within 24 hour shatched the life of Sunnybank’s first Champion.
Treve is a ancestor of our collies something that thrills me but he is much, much more. From Treve came his son Ch. Sigurdson, his son Ch. Sunnybank Explorer, his daughter Fair Ellen, his son Cavalier, his grandson Ch. Thane and 39 litters than came from Sunnybank that were from his lines!
Ch. Sunnybank Sigurd passed away from this earth on June 24, 1924. Like some of our collies here at Niamh’s Misty Meadow he died way too young. Yet his impact on Sunnybank and the collie world were tremendous.
On a wierd sidenote, June 24th is a day of Tragedy in Sunnybank for in 1924 Treve died, in 1925 on this date Bobby died and exactly one year before Treve died Lad’s son Wolf went out in a blaze of glory saving another dog from a onrushing train as it hit him and snuffed out his life. Imagine losing not only one beloved family member but three different ones on the same date three years in a row!
