While I have been lucky and not had any of my collies sprayed by a skunk I have had other dogs sprayed in the past and I sure wish I had this homemade concoction to help remove the smell. A wonderful and kind woman I work with gave me this recipe after her dog tangled with a skunk last night and she swears that it worked immediately in removing the smell.
One word of advice, the mixture of these compounds has to be done just before you use it for if you try to store it it will blow a sealed bottle apart for the ingredients do cause a fizzing reaction like a soda pop. So, do not make until you need!
Now remember you have to bathe your dog in this so you will need big bottles of each ingredient which is safe to store separately in your home and in fact you probably already have it on hand;
NINA’S SKUNK REMOVAL AND PET SCENT REMOVAL FORMULA
3/4 of the mixture Peroxide
1/4 of the mixture Baking Soda
1 Bottle Dish Soap (this is to cut the skunk oils so Dawn might be your best bet)
Mix well and bathe your dog in it rubbing it in good. Then thoroughly rinse. Now, this will cut the natural oils in your pet’s hair so I would recommend that you use some sort of oiled brush or comb when you brush them out afterward or you may develop really dry skin temporarily.
I hope this helps and let us know if it works for you too for my friend swears by it and I know if she swears by it it works! Thank you to my friend for telling me about this!
Of course, the best bet is to keep your dog away from a skunk, but that is easier said than done!

Smoke says: Trevor didnt need this for he didnt smell skunky!
I’ve never met a skunk, I don’t think they live around here. I’m sure my big sister is smellier than one of those any day. hehehehe
LOL
I smell like a skunk on my best days. If I ever got sprayed, I think it would be an improvement! thanks for the recipe, just in case.
Love and licks,
Cupcake
oh cupcake you are so sweet there is no way you can smell like a skunk!
Lucky us -we don’t have skunks but our Tommy loves to roll around in fox poo – to get this stink off we rub in tomato juice before bathing and he comes out sweet smelling and ready for the next roll around!
My sister just had her dog skunked and just used Dawn. She said it was amazing how well it worked.
Sam
We have just used Dawn too and it take most of it out. But, with collies and their long fur just a touch is too much if you know what I mean…
But, yes, always use Dawn! It is amazing stuff and I can well imagine a short to medium hair dog it would take it all out for sure.
Is Dawn a washing up liquid like Fairy in England.
No skunks here I don’t think but plenty of foxes…so maybe trying Tina Holmes tomato juice could come in useful
Hi!
Hope this helps!
Dawn is a dish soap that is used for just about everything here. It seems to be amazing in so many different uses. Never heard of Fairy, so I am off to read about it.
I’ve used that mixture too many times! But I have to say that it works well. My retriever hasn’t learned that just because it looks like a kitty at 4 a.m., doesn’t mean it is a kitty!
meow? heheheh Thank you for your thumbs up on the recipe.
That is a good tip and the stuff you can keep on hand (unmixed). I need to print this out just in case!
never hurts to be ready!!!! skunks… sigh….
Lola has been sprayed five (5!) times. She just won’t give up on chasing skunks. We use Nature’s Miracle and it it is very effective but you have to follow the directions to the letter. I keep a large bottle on hand at all times.
LOL…. some dogs seem to almost enjoy it! Amazing….
Why do people worry so much about washing off the skunk smell? Once my eyes stop burning, I don’t really mind it. It’s kind of a badge of honor. Next time… I’m going to get that skunk for sure!
Ginger says she wants a skunk and she will wear it as a badge of honor too!
We are lucky that we don’t have skunks in Ireland. My lot do try to roll in fox poo though, which really stinks!
fox poo? yuk! LOL….. be glad you do not have skunks… peeee-uuuuuu they make it smell outside for days after they spray…
I have heard of that, and yes definitely Dawn, I used that once on my dog who was sprayed on the head and it was all I had at the time and the Dawn in warm water was enough to get rid of the smell of a light spraying of the skunk.
